The man arrested in a violent Sioux City home invasion will make his first appearance in court Thursday morning. Police say 23-year old James Kroll bludgeoned a 54-year old man to death with a crowbar in a home at 504 39th Street Place early Wednesday morning. A 54-year old woman was also attacked and taken to Mercy Medical Center. Police say the victims knew Kroll, but they are giving details of the relationship.
Testimony resumes Thursday morning at 9 in the re-trial of Brad Gregg. He's the Sioux City man prosecutors say threw punches that killed an Ida Grove man outside a 4th Street bar two years ago. Last September, Gregg's first trial ended with a hung jury. Gregg is charged with Involuntary Manslaughter and Assault Causing Serious Injury. He faces up to ten years in prison if convicted.
A new program will help Iowans who are unemployed. Governor Terry Branstad traveled to the campus of Buena Vista University in Storm Lake to share details on the "Skilled Iowa Initiative." It's an internship that evaluates what skills job seekers have. It also assures employers that those job seekers are qualified. The Governor is encouraging employers to hire those workers.
Several Iowans are being honored for going above and beyond to help others. Dozens were nominated across the state for the "Governor's Volunteer Awards". The award is given to those who worked to help Iowans or Iowa organizations. Beside a time commitment, these people have shown leadership in their service to others. Volunteers in Iowa have contributed more than 93 million dollars worth of service.
