SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

A California man has been sentenced to prison time for hauling illegal immigrants across the country.

24-year-old Maurelio Diaz-Alfonso was arrested after a traffic stop on Interstate 29 near Onawa, Iowa.  The state trooper who pulled over his sport utility vehicle found 12 other people inside.

Diaz-Alfonso, of Riverside, California, later told federal agents that he was paid to drive his passengers from Mesa, Arizona, to Minnesota, Wisconsin and New York.

He pleaded guilty in March. A federal judge in Sioux City sentenced him to 13 months in prison.
