The Sioux City Explorers won for the sixth time in eight games, beating Winnipeg 3-2 on Thursday night. The victory evened Sioux City's overall record to 14-14, while the first place Goldeyes fell to 18-8.
Sioux City got on the board in the second inning. After Ryan Priddy got to second on a two-out double, Wally Backman, Junior, singled to get Priddy home and make it 1-0.
The X's scored another run in third when catcher Ray Serrano doubled with two outs to drive in Michael Lang. The lead went to 3-0 in the fifth when Kris Sanchez singled to bring in Yusuke Inoguchi.
X's starting pitcher Jason Jarvis held Winnipeg scoreless through the first five innings. The righthander threw seven innings, giving up just one run on eight hits.
The start of the game was delayed for just over an hour because of rain. Game two of the series will be Friday at 7:05 PM.
