Known as Emancipation Day, African-American communities across the country celebrated Juneteenth today.
In Sioux City, they did so through song, dance, and plenty of good food.
The rain brought the celebration inside, but it didn't stop the fun.
The once-a-year events commemorate the day slaves became free.
Volunteer Ike Rayford said, "We want all of Sioux City to come together to celebrate with us because, you know, this is historic event when you think about it that our nation, this was the end, this was the last time that slavery would ever exist and so we want to celebrate that and we just think that all Americans should celebrate it."
The event is in its 147th year and is the oldest know ceremony commemorating the end of slavery.
