Dry conditions spark worries in South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -

Dry conditions in South Dakota are worrying everyone from farmers and ranchers to fireworks dealers.
Extension Service crops specialist Larry Wagner in Sioux Falls tells the Yankton Daily Press & Dakotan that South Dakota isn't facing drought like some states, but crops will suffer if the region doesn't get some decent rain soon.
The Rapid City Journal reports that in parts of western South Dakota, this year's hay crop could be one-fourth or even one-third the size of last year's.
The dry conditions also are a worry for fireworks retailers gearing up for the Fourth of July, and for fire officials. They're urging people to have water nearby when lighting off firecrackers.
