MERRILL, Iowa (KTIV) -
A strong supporter of ethanol, Iowa governor Terry Branstad toured a Merrill, Iowa plant that makes millions of gallons of the corn-based fuel additive Monday.
At Plymouth Energy, workers took Branstad inside the labs where a lot of the ethanol is refined and showed him the vast exterior of the plant.
Branstad says he was pleased with the plant and the number of native Iowans who work there.
He says it's especially important to produce more ethanol now since a lot of the old tax incentives are expiring.
"We're going to continue to reduce our dependency on foreign oil and replace it with renewable fuels. It's working. It's made a real difference, and because of this, in Iowa, we have among the lowest gas prices in the nation," said Gov. Terry Branstad.
Plymouth Energy produces more than 500 million gallons of ethanol every year.
