SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The hot, dry weather is a concern for many, especially as we get closer to the 4th of July.
A spokesperson for Sioux City Fire Rescue said fires can get out of control when winds pick up, which is important to keep in mind as we light any type of fireworks this Independence Day.
In fact, two out of five fires on the fourth can be tied to fireworks.
It's all reason for extra precaution as we make our way towards the holiday.
"I think in 2010 there were 14,000 acres burned around here due to fireworks. When they go up, you just don't where they go down and so just the best practice. Go out and watch the certified pyrotechnicians. They'll show you a great show, and there's no charge," said Jesse Pedersen, Sioux City Fire Rescue Public Information Officer.
Police are also giving a reminder that fireworks that go "up" or go "boom" are illegal in the state of Iowa.
That leaves sparklers and snakes for Iowans.
Police say if someone is caught in possession of any other kind of fireworks, they could face a fine of up to $100 and possible jail time.
"We do take it serious for all the safety reasons. Not that we're fun haters, but as Jesse said, leave the dangerous work to the professionals who know how to handle them and handle them in a professional way and a safe way," said Chad Sheehan, Sioux City Police Department.
A couple of those professional displays will take place in conjunction with the Big Parade and Saturday in the Park.
