SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
There's nothing like getting behind the wheel of a car for many.
Today kids across the Midwest came to Sioux City for that thrill.
...Riding in contraptions they built themselves.
But don't worry... they were driving derby racers.
For Derby Racers like Seth Chicoine, speed runs through the blood. Although on a little different stage from his favorite Nascar driver, Jeff Gordon.
Seth and his fellow derby racers share the same passions: preparation, determination, and most of all, competition.
Seth Chicoine, Polk City, said, "With the win that I got last week, it really helped me jump from fourth to second."
Kids 8-18 come from as far away as Kansas. They're here for the Siouxland Soap Box Derby. Their goal: get to Bowling Green Nationals or Akron, Ohio as local champs.
Rick Atkinson, Greater Siouxland Director claimed, "This is their last chance before any of those championship races in the country to get any points or any practice before those big races."
Whether it's racking up the points or just having fun..soap box derby racing is for just about everyone. Racers buy car kits, put them together. Then have to meet strict rules, such as weight limits... But...
James Kunkle, Council Bluffs, said "No matter what, you can do it. You don't have to have a skill or anything just to do it."
For Seth and his dad... this race isn't about winning, so much as it is about time together...
Jeff Chicoine, Polk City, added "We get to spend Saturday and Sunday with a lot of friends..Good competition and it's a good family event."
