Phase one of Industrial Highway opens

NORFOLK, Neb. (KTIV/US92) -

As of noon Monday, the first phase of the Northeast Industrial Highway north of Norfolk, Nebraska officially opened to traffic.

The completed section runs from Highway 35 near Woodland Park and goes west to Victory Road where it gives truck traffic front door access to three large industries.

The new road will allow decreased city truck traffic en route to Norfolk Iron and Metal, Nucor Steel and the Louis Dryfuss Ethanol Plant.

The project is a joint venture between the industries along with Madison County, Stanton County and the City of Norfolk.

"They all got together and decided that it was time to get it done. We've been talking about it for somewhere between 15 and 20 years and we finally just got going on it and we're going to keep going", said Dick Johnson, Madison County Highway Superintendent.

Officials say the project not only brings about increased safety, but could also include an economic development boost with extra industrial potential.

Phase two of the project will include a two mile section of road between Victory Road and North First Street.

It's expected to start construction this fall.

Phase three will take the highway from North First Street to Highway 81, creating a complete bypass around the east side of the city.

Total cost of the entire project is $11 million.
