Crew member dies in plane crash in SD

A plane crash in South Dakota leaves at least one crew member dead. A North Carolina-based Air National Guard C-130 cargo plane crashed Sunday while fighting wildfires in the western part of the state. The military confirms that Lieutenant Colonel Paul Mikeal was killed and that five other people were on board. The military has grounded seven more C-130s that were being used to fight wildfires.

New travel center creates new jobs

 

There will be 88 new local jobs in Sioux City with the opening of a new truck stop. "Pilot Flying J" opened up its new travel center off of Interstate 29 on Singing Hills Boulevard. The pit stop includes a Subway and another restaurant, "Moes," which is set to open mid-July.

First portion of I-29 project to be finished in September

 

The Sioux City City Council gets an update on the Interstate 29 construction project. The Iowa DOT has set aside nearly $300 million toward the project. Officials say that will ensure it gets done, but it could mean we'll see those orange cones for another 6 years according to the Iowa DOT.

Iowa gets freeze under the No Child Left Behind Act

 

The U.S. Department of Education has approved Iowa's request for a one-year freeze on state targets under the No Child Left Behind Act. Iowa's education director says it will give the state time to seek permanent relief from what he calls "unrealistic accountability measures."
