SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

A Sioux City man says he's not guilty of using a crowbar to bludgeon two people.

23-year-old James Kroll faces charges of first-degree murder, attempted murder and first-degree burglary.

Authorities say he broke into Mary Tope's northside home before dawn on June 13th and attacked Tope, and her boyfriend, 54-year-old Jeffrey Moravec, while they slept.

Moravec died of his injuries.

Tope is still recovering from her injuries at Sioux City's Mercy Medical Center.

Tope's daughter, who is also Kroll's ex-girlfriend, was also home at the time.

She wasn't hurt.

Kroll's trial date has not been set.
