July 4th celebrations also about veterans and freedom

STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -

Well, the "Big Parade" wasn't the only thing going on Wednesday in Storm Lake.

The "Star Spangled Spectacular" runs for two days, offering everything from food, to a chance to talk about the freedoms we enjoy.

With the American flags flying high, the Fourth of July is a great time to get together with friends and family, spend time outdoors, and have a good ol' barbecue.

"Pork burgers are good and we just really enjoy eating it," said Matt McCarthy, Buena Vista Pork Producers.

This barbecue put on by the local Pork Producers is a little bigger than your neighbors picnic, feeding all who come out to Storm Lake's "Star Spangled Spectacular."

"What not a better place to support Storm Lake and the people here," McCarthy said.

Those people are enjoying just about everything they need on this great day, shade from the hot sun, cold beverages, and did I mention burgers?

Nothing spells the Fourth of July like eating a burger along a nice, cool lake. But this holiday is about more than grill outs and fireworks.

The "Star Spangled Spectacular" pays tribute to all American military members who served or are serving overseas, focusing on our freedoms as Americans.

"It brings out the pride in everybody. The flags flying, the balloons going around and the personal freedoms that you have on a day like today. It's just awesome," said Rodney Pooler, veteran.

And as all veterans know, freedom doesn't come free.

"I understand the time is about spending time with family and friends and having a good time with your family and friends, but I hope that people don't forget that there is service men and women serving overseas that can't enjoy those freedoms," Marty DeMuth, veteran, said.

Those who were at the event got to hear veterans speak, hear the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance, and see the flag raised.

"To see that flag whip in the air, knowing that I did what I could, I guess it's hard to put into words," said DeMuth.

Words like brave, heroic, and courageous can all be used to describe our military members.

"Without them we probably wouldn't be doing what we're doing today so we appreciate what they've done and what they do," said McCarthy.

Events at Chautauqua Park in Storm Lake go on Wednesday night capping off with Fireworks at dusk.
