Dry crops could mean higher grocery prices

NEAR HAWARDEN, Iowa (KTIV) -

While this latest string of hot, dry weather, probably has many enjoying the pools, it's anything but fun for those dealing with area crops.

In fact, crop prices have risen drastically over the past few weeks across the country.

35%, that's how much the government says the nation's corn crop price has risen over the past three weeks.

To blame, mother nature.

"May was a fairly wet month. And then, now, June's been fairly dry. July's starting to be very dry," said John Hansen, Grain Manager for Farmers CoOp Society.

What was originally supposed to be a bumper crop season has now turned into anything but that.

"And now with the acres. Some of the bean plowed under because of drought. And the production, now our yield content's going down sharply," said Hansen.

Prices could be going sky high, from the gas pump to your grocery cart.

"Anything to do with milk products, or beef products, or pork products, or chicken products. This has a huge impact on it," said Hansen.

Right now, farmers are depending on irrigation. You can see what difference the extra water makes. Tassels on the top of more healthy looking corn. Shriveled up stalks with those that are thirsting.

"People are wondering whether we're going to have 150 bush yield, or 50 bush yield, or no yield," said Mark Degen, Borchers Supply.

To turn things around, one official says we need rain fast and a lot of it.

"Oh, an inch would help. Two inches would be better," said Degen.

Something, only Mother Nature can control.
