Kerrey/Fischer debate the merits of a health care debate

NORFOLK, Neb. (US92) -

Both candidates vying for Ben Nelson's open Senate seat made their way through Siouxland Saturday.

Democrat Bob Kerrey held a forum in Norfolk, Nebraska.  He spent over an hour discussing jobs and health care.

Kerrey also echoed his call from earlier this week to schedule a second debate with Republican Deb Fischer focused on health care reform. Kerrey says he feels the topic deserves its own separate debate, as it's been the number one topic of discussion among voters.

"Health care connects very much to what is on almost everybody's mind in Nebraska, which is the accumulation of debt and the deficits that have tormented us one more time," explained Kerrey.

Speaking to our US-92 Norfolk News Bureau, Fischer said she doesn't see the need for an extra debate.

"I don't think it's necessary to have one specific debate on health care. That's just one of many issues that Nebraskans are concerned about," said Fischer.

Fischer said she thinks the economy is just as important as health care, and one Nebraskans want discussion on too.

The candidates have scheduled one debate so far, at the Nebraska State Fair in August.
