SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) -
Vero Visser knew she needed to get an internship before her senior year at Dordt College.
"Some of the internships were, like, the whole summer long, and I didn't want that. I wanted to work a little bit more, too," said Visser.
The media student applied for a general internship with the radio department at global Christian organization HCJB. With missions in places like Africa and South America, Visser knew she might end up spending part of her summer overseas, but she never imagined what she will actually be doing.
"And I was like, 'Are you serious'? So, then I found out that I was applying to film at the London Olympics," said Visser.
She won't be capturing the gold, like athletes, but instead, through the lens of her camera, the spirit of the games.
"My role is just getting the moments, like grabbing the moments and filming, shooting the whole time," said Visser.
Her media arts teacher wasn't surprised to see Visser get this chance. Visser's spent previous summers interning in Los Angeles, and spending time with producers.
"How many of us get that opportunity? That's huge, not only to see the Olympics but to go there, you know in her chosen profession, in her field," said Mark Volkers, her professor.
Visser says the trip to London shows her how much she's been blessed, since she first came to study in America.
"So, it's God opening doors for me to go and bring in people again that are supporting me and believing in the dreams that He has for me," said Visser.
Some interns will be in front of the camera, interviewing athletes, but Visser loves creating from behind it.
"I know it's going to be so busy that people are just going to be running around all the time," said Visser.
"The job market today, it's who you know and what have you done. So that's two huge pluses for her right there," said Volkers.
Plus, there's one other goal: To meet some athletes from her home country of Paraguay.
"It'd be awesome if I get to see my people there," said Visser.
Visser will leave for London July 15, before beginning a week of training. The Olympic Games run through August 12 and can be seen on NBC and KTIV.
