Fred Mitchell celebrates his third quarter interception in Sioux City's 61-28 win over Mid-Missouri.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The Sioux City Bandits defense intercepted Mid-Missouri's Kyle Middleton four times, returning two for touchdowns as the Bandits advanced to their second straight American Professional Football League Championship with a 61-28 victory Sunday night.
At the end of the first half with the Outlaws knocking on the door Rahn Franklin picked off Middleton and returned it 48 yards as Sioux City took a 26-7 lead into the half.
Under pressure all night from the Bandits defense, Middleton's fourth interception found its way into the arms of Fred Mitchell, who took it 19 yards for the touchdown.
"I've been here for 10-plus years, been around the league for 10-plus years and to get my first last year and now, to turn around I'm blessed we haven't lost in two years," Mitchell said following the win. "And, then to turn around and try to get a second ring? I mean, you can only thank one person and that's the man upstairs."
As a whole, the Bandits defense held Mid-Missouri to -3 rushing yards and 180 total yards of offense.
Reigning APFL MVP Scott Jensen threw for 111 yards and three scores in the victory.
Saturday's championship might be the toughest game of the year for the Bandits. Council Bluffs, who defeated Oklahoma 37-32 to advance to the title game, has added players from the Indoor Football League.
"You know they've obviously beefed up their roster bringing in some Omaha Beef players. Added quite a bit of dimension to their team," Bandits Head Coach Erv Strohbeen said. "We went down and watched them last night. It's a whole new ball club. We expect a dog fight next Saturday and it's going to be a good game."
The 2012 APFL Championship is Saturday, July 14. Kickoff is at 7:05 at the Tyson Events Center.
