New Sioux City program aims to douse fire concerns

Posted:
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -

Each year more than 2,500 people die in US home fires, damage is estimated at about $7.3 billion. But, frightening flames are furthest thing from Adrian Wisner's mind each day. She, like many homeowners, is sure her house is up to speed when it comes to fire safety.

"I don't know that I have any fire hazards. I am pretty conscious," said Wisner.

To make sure, some of Sioux City's firefighters have stopped by to check for themselves. They're here as part of a new city effort that started in January. It's called S.A.F.E. (Smoke Alarm For Every Home Program).  It's goal? Make sure everyone's house has a working smoke alarm.

"Any kind of early detection that'll give you enough warning when you are sound asleep, to get out as quickly as possible," said Joe Rodriguez with Sioux City Fire Rescue.

So far, Rodriguez says they've visited about 50 homes, and placed more than 200 detectors.

The program covers more then just alarms, too. Firefighters will look for potential fire hazards. Some of the biggest; having combustibles too close to a furnace, worn out wires left under rugs, and kitchen appliances left on like stoves, even toasters.

"If someone accidentally, or if you have pets, [they] could knock it over. Or, turn it on. That could catch fire," said Rodriguez.

Wisner found out a few batteries were dead in her detectors, and she has a rather dated extinguisher.

"It says 1973," said Rodriguez reading the side of the device.

Having crews find a few hazards was a surprise, but one Wisner can live with.
