CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KWWL) -
November must be approaching. "It's campaign season," said President Barack Obama. "Here in Iowa, it's always campaign season."
In front of a packed gym of supporters on the campus of Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids President Obama looked to spark the same energy that propelled him to the White House in 2008. "This is a state that gave me a chance when no one else would," said President Barack Obama.
The president emphasized the need for building an economy from the middle class out. President Obama called on Congress to act and extend Bush-era tax cuts for households making $250,000 or less, and to let the tax cuts for the wealthiest 2% of Americans expire. "Doesn't it make sense to keep taxes low for 98% of Americans who are working hard and can't afford," said President Barack Obama.
Among those the tax extension would benefit the McLaughlin family of Cedar Rapids. The middle class family is expecting their second child. They say the tax cut expiring would create a significant burden on them. Jason McLaughlin, Cedar Rapids said, "This little one right here. All that money is going to go to daycare and work, let alone all the other things we want to do."
Then there's Lisa Loepp, a single mother of three, who is hopeful for another Obama term in the White House to help turn the economy around. Lisa Loepp, Cedar Rapids said "I think he's done a great job. A lot of people say it's his fault that we're in the situation we're in. Well I'm sorry he was left with a mess."
