South Dakota looking to boost college graduates

Posted:

A South Dakota legislative group studying how to graduate more students from public universities and technical institutes will keep an eye on a pilot program that rewards schools for success.
The Postsecondary Education Study Committee is studying how the state invests money in postsecondary education and what that investment produces. Sen. Mark Johnston tells the Argus Leader he thinks officials should look closely at a performance-based funding model.
The Board of Regents has initiated a pilot program that will direct $6 million to public universities based on the schools' production of graduates.
Lake Area Technical Institute President Deb Shephard says South Dakota needs to quit defining the success of higher education institutions by how much they grow and instead base success on how well those schools meet their missions
