Lake Yankton not popular as osprey nesting site

YANKTON, S.D. (AP) -

South Dakota wildlife officials say there isn't any sign of success so far for a program to bring osprey to Lake Yankton.
The osprey is a type of fish-eating bird. It's a threatened species in South Dakota.
For the last eight years, the South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks Department has been trying to encourage osprey nesting outside of the Black Hills.
More than 100 birds were brought to the Lake Yankton area. Two years ago, the Game, Fish & Parks department and the federal Army Corps of Engineers built osprey nesting platforms near Lake Yankton.
A state agency spokeswoman tells the Yankton Press & Dakotan (http://bit.ly/Lvvpp4) the platforms haven't been used yet.
The birds have a high mortality rate because of hunting and collisions with power lines and vehicles.
