SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
People visiting the Sioux City Farmers Market Wednesday shared some of the ways they like to prepare summer sweet corn.
"We like the candy corn and the peaches and cream too. We like that," Tara Koob of Sioux City said.
There are as many types of edible ears as there are ways to eat it.
"I like the one that's grilled. It tastes sweeter and yummier," Luna Cisneros, of Sioux City said.
"We just eat it off of the cob or we can," Ann Hall of Sloan Iowa said.
"We just boil it and eat it that way and sometimes we grill it too," Koob said.
So how do the candy kernels taste so good? What's the secret? We asked the local growers at the Farmer's Market to clue us in on how they grow such golden goodies.
"I have one variety that I've grown for over 10 years that everybody loves and there is only one other person in Sioux City that's got something very similar," Ron Muth, the owner of the Veggie-Patch said.
"I have some quality things that I do with the flavor when I harvest it too. But every thing is a secret. So sorry," Jim Brown, the owner of Farmer Brown's Garden said.
While they are staying tight lipped on how they produce so many varieties, they were willing to share a few recipes.
"A sprinkle of salt and fresh lime juice. You've got to try it," Brown said.
So whether you like to eat it off the cob or other ways, these sweet and succulent summer treats are ripe and ready to eat by the mouthful.
"I think being from Iowa and just getting to have that fresh sweet corn is a treat for us and we should celebrate that," Koob said.
Something sweet most look forward to as a summer staple. Brown also reminds people not to over cook sweet corn, it gets mushy.
He even eats it raw.
And Muth says that right now, the ears are a lot sweeter than earlier planted corn.
He says as the season goes along, it just gets sweeter.
