Changes coming to Iowa's Aquatic Invasive Species Law

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -

Some changes are in the works for Iowa's Aquatic Invasive Species Law. A committee established by Governor Terry Branstad has come up with the proposed revisions. The main one requires boaters to drain water out of their boat and to inspect their boat and trailer before transporting on a highway.

Martin Konrad of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Bureau says input given at several upcoming public meetings will determine what they present to lawmakers.

"Based on our stakeholders input then we'll present it to our DNR administrators saying, you know, from our stakeholders they're telling us this about what we are proposing in code changes and from there we will develop a legislative package around those stakeholder comments and then those comments will be presented pretty early, late summer, to legislative committees on what they're proposing, what stakeholders are saying," Konrad said.

A stakeholder meeting is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Monday, July 30th at the Dickinson County Expo Building in Spirit Lake.
