Due to the ongoing drought, more Siouxland counties have burn bans in effect. Clay and Calhoun counties have joined Pocahontas, Plymouth and Lyon counties with burn bans.
The Iowa State Fire Marshal warns the state is a "tinder box" and is urging people to be extremely careful with lit cigarettes and outdoor burning.
Nearly one-third of Iowa is now under a burn ban. During a burn ban, a permit is needed from a fire chief to have a controlled burn. Violators can be cited or arrested.
