The Sioux City Explorers lost the opening game of their four-game series with St. Paul, 7-3, on Friday night. The Saints (29-28), who won their sixth straight game, built a 5-0 lead in the third inning on a three-run home run from right fielder Miles Durham.
Kris Sanchez got the Explorers (27-33) on the board with a two-run homer to left-center in the fourth inning. It was the 12th homer of the season for Sanchez, which leads the team.
Sioux City cut the lead to 5-3 in the sixth when Brandon Newton scored on a ground out by Peter Barrows. St. Paul scored two more runs with two outs in the top of the ninth.
X's starting pitcher Ty Marotz completed seven innings of work, giving up five runs on nine hits with two strikeouts.
The series continues on Saturday night at 7:05 at Lewis and Clark Park. The first 500 fans will receive a 20th Anniversary X's cap, courtesy of KTIV-TV.
