YANKTON, S.D. (KTIV) -

A South Dakota man convicted of shooting and killing his girlfriend is appealing the verdict and sentence.

Nicholas Hines, of Yankton, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a 100-year prison sentence.

The 30-year-old Hines would be eligible for parole in 50 years.

Hines acknowledged in court that he fired a gun that killed his girlfriend, 25-year-old Brianna Marie Knoll, last April.

He said the gun discharged accidentally.

Hines had a blood-alcohol level three times above the legal driving limit.
