ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa (KTIV) -
Nine people, who work for Lyon County, Iowa, face charges of doing work for the county, but keeping the money.
Michael Modder, Gerald Grave Jr., Robert Gruis, and Rickie Denekas are accused of selling scrap iron belonging to Lyon County, and then splitting the proceeds amongst them.
Two other men, Gary Vogel and Steve Ageson, are accused of knowing, or allowing, the proceeds from the sale to be used for other purposes other then depositing it as county revenue.
Lorna VanMaanen is accused of failing to report cash income as county revenue.
Todd Huisman is charged with selling the scrap iron-- and things like used batteries, and aluminum signs-- for $9,000, and failing to turn in the proceeds to the county auditor as revenue.
In a separate investigation, former Lyon County engineer Jeffrey Williams is charged with receiving training and equipment from Lyon County to perform septic tank inspections, which he then conducted as a private business. Williams is also charged for receiving proceeds of more than $1,000 in that business, which should have been county revenue.
