Schaller, Iowa (KTIV) -
Police say they've had about ten cases of heat-related illnesses on today's route from Cherokee to Lake View. They say they've also had a few wipeouts along the paths, but the main goal of keeping riders safe has been accomplished.
Emergency personnel say they've had quite a few people stop by their trailer on the second day.
"Most people come in and just complain that they're overall weak and tired. A little dizzy, just non-specific complaints," said Ross Mathiasen, an EMT for the University of Iowa.
Some riders began leaving Cherokee just before daybreak again. Others say, that's a good idea in theory.
"One would think we would start earlier, but we haven't. We're a little slow to rise," said Sarah Schau of Glenwood, Iowa. "I guess to combat the heat, we're drinking a lot of water, taking a lot of breaks."
Other riders say finding a good place to hang out in the shade for awhile is another way to beat the heat and finish the day strong.
