Schaller, Iowa (KTIV) -
Morgan Sperry is riding in her fourth RAGBRAI this year. She says the heat can make things exhausting. That's why pop-up vendors are making her day.
"Oh, my gosh, it's what I depend on," said Sperry.
Leaving Cherokee just after 8 a.m., Sperry says she tired quickly. But spotting a stand was a sight for her tired eyes.
"To have one come along at the nine mile marker, just an ice cold water, wonderful watermelon, it means the world to me," said Sperry.
The riders aren't the only ones benefiting from these stands. Towns are, too. One group called S.O.S. is raising money to save the local swimming pool, which could cost about $70,000.
"We had to put in a new filtering system, we had to put in a new pump, we had to put in a new heater, we're fixing the roof over the bath house," said Marcia Woodke.
The first bikers rode into town early in the morning, and shortly after, Woodke's tent was running out of inventory.
"We've sold out of our Gatorade already, we're almost out of our food," said Woodke. "It's been terrific."
What's even better than food stands along the way? Riders will say it's the free stands, like those that offer popcorn and water.
"They don't get to hear free food too often on this ride and I think that they really enjoy it," said Kyle Bennett of Schaller, Iowa.
And before Sperry hits the road again, she'll savor the snacks and the time she has to hydrate.
"If I didn't stop, it wouldn't be fun either, that's part of stopping off," said Sperry.
She's not alone. The stands are pretty popular spots for riders to relax and recharge.
