A Cherokee, Iowa man has died in a crash in a construction zone on Highway 59 in Ida County. The Iowa State Patrol says several cars were waiting in line for a pilot car to escort them through the work zone about 4:30 yesterday afternoon when a semi collided with the back of a car driven by 75 year-old Larry Watts of Cherokee, Iowa. Watts was pronounced dead at the scene.
Fire officials say the wildfire in north-central Nebraska is now contained, but not before it burned for six days and charred 100,000 acres. A map shows the area where the fire has burned Keya Paha, Cherry, and Brown counties. Firefighters will watch for hot spots for the next several days.
Crews cleaning up a mercury spill are dressed in protective suits and are using a special vacuum to remove the mercury at an Armstrong, Iowa bar. That's where a painter took the mercury after discovering it inside a local home. Crews are also pulling up some of the bars linoleum flooring, then cleaning that separately. In the coming days, they'll also clean up at a home in Armstrong where the mercury was found and poured into a children's sandbox.
