SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV/KUOO) -
One of Dickinson county's most historical sites will officially be designated with a historical marker in a ceremony this weekend.
The Daughters of the American Revolution will place the marker at the former Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad depot in Spirit Lake.
"One of the things we want to emphasize is this is where soldiers left to serve our country and were welcomed home from like the 1880's way back in the early wars until early 1950, this is where people would always go and say goodbye to the soldiers and welcome back," said Spirit Lake DAR member Colleen Lemkuil.
The depot also served as a destination for scores of lakes area tourists.
Passenger train service ended in the early 1950's. Freight service continued until the early 1970's, when the line was abandoned.
The Dickinson County Historical Society purchased the old depot and converted it to a museum.
Saturday's ceremony begins at 10:00 a.m. at the former depot in Spirit Lake and is open to the public.
