Fire crews are working hard to put out fires in north-central Nebraska

Fire officials are optimistic they'll be able to contain the massive wildfires in north-central Nebraska Friday. That's why emergency management officials have dropped evacuation orders for the towns of Norden and Meadville. They also reopened Highway 12. Officials also hope to open all of the scenic Niobrara River to boating and tubing this weekend.

UPDATE: 'Smoking materials' cause of Jay Avenue fire

Improperly discarded smoking materials are being blamed for a fire in Sioux City's Morningside. The flames damaged the siding and the balcony of the upstairs apartment at 3107 and 1/2 Jay Avenue, where a couple and their small child live. They were able to get out safely by using the fire escape.

South Dakota's Governor talks economy and drought in Dakota Dunes

South Dakota Governor Dennis Daugaard says he's concerned about the ongoing drought. At an economic development event in Dakota Dunes yesterday, Daugaard said state and national initiatives are falling in place to help farmers. But even still, the Republican fears the situation may get worse before it gets better for farmers and ranchers. That's why the state set up a new website focused on the drought.

Spreading the word about Down Syndrome 

The founder of GiGi's Playhouse comes to Sioux City. Nancy Gianni started the center nine years ago when her daughter was born with Down Syndrome. Since opening up in Chicago, the program now has 14 different centers, including one in Sioux City. GiGi's Playhouse provides teaching and support to those with Down Syndrome and their families.
