Westside Little League is the first team to win the 11-12 year old state title since 1985.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
The 11-12 year old Westside Little League team rallied to defeat Raccoon Valley 10-7 late Thursday night to advance to the Central Regional Tournament in Indianapolis.
Six teams will be participating in the tournament with the winner advancing to the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
"Getting a better chance to play in the Little League World Series, getting step by step closer. It'd be awesome (to play in Williamsport)," Luke Johnson said.
The boys from Westside are the first to win the Iowa state title since Morningside National took home the crown in 1985.
A team from Westside last won the state tournament in 1983.
"It's crazy. Last year we were the district champions and now to take that to the next level and be the first team in almost 30 years to reach this point is pretty impressive," Head Coach Corey Dickson said."
"It's just a great feeling heading out there knowing that you get to play baseball and your season isn't over," added Austin Carter "Playing baseball is awesome, it's a great sport to play. You're out there. Just have fun."
The regional tournament begins August 2. Westside opens the tournament action against Team Nebraska on August 4.
