SIOUX CITY, Iowa -
Most people go to the farmers market to get fresh food or to take in the sights and sounds of the different venders.
But this Sioux City Farmers Market had something a little different for its shoppers.
"The Conservation Station-A Mobile Learning Center" put on by Iowa Learning Farms was at the event informing people on the importance of soil and water quality.
The station had three different displays, including a rainfall simulator that demonstrated how much goes into our waters.
The goal is to get the word out around the state on just how important soil really is to the state of Iowa.
Brett McArtor, Intern Iowa Learning Farms said, "That's what Iowa is. I mean, that's our basic economy and if the soil gets eroded away because once it hits the stream it's gone. If the soil gets eroded away we've got nothing left."
And with these dry conditions, the hot weather can be very damaging to the soil.
Aaron Andrews, Extension Specialist Iowa Learning Farms added, "You know as you drive around the state you can really see the impact of the soil erosion on the slide slopes and the hill slopes where we've lost some of that top soil. You can really see where those are the first area's to dry out and burn up and probably going to be yielded pretty low."
Organizers of the station said they had over 180 people stop by their booth during the Farmers Market.
