STORM LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) -

Doctors have upgraded a northwest Iowa teen to "serious" condition after he was struck by a train while walking on the tracks in Storm Lake.

Police say a Canadian National train hit 19-year-old Deon Parkhurst from behind as he walked on the tracks, near the intersection of West Milwaukee Avenue and Barton Street, Wednesday afternoon.

Police are investigating whether Parkhurst was listening to music, or otherwise distracted and may not have heard the train coming.

Parkhurst was rushed to a Storm Lake hospital, then flown to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
