Gary-Southshore scored five runs in the fifth inning and beat the Sioux City Explorers, 9-4, on Wednesday night at Lewis and Clark Park.
Railcats first baseman Craig Maddox hit a two-out grand slam in the fifth to put Gary up for good. X's starter Nick Schumacher pitched five innings and took the loss. The former Wayne State right-hander gave up seven runs on just four hits, while walking six batters.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning, Sioux City cut the lead in half when Peter Barrows homered in the bottom of the first to make it 2-1.
The X's took a 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the second. Brian Bistagne's grounder scored Yusuke Inoguchi and Wally Backman, Junior, had an RBI single to put Sioux City (31-40) in front.
The three game series ends on Thursday at 7:05. Winnipeg starts a three game series at Lewis and Clark Park on Friday.
