OLYMPICS: Cedar Falls divers outclass Ron Steele on the board

It had been 35 years since KWWL's Ron Steele had set foot on a diving board. But in the spirit of the Olympics, he decided to go head to head with two of the best divers in the Cedar Valley.

Kaitie Mason, a recent Cedar Falls graduate, who will dive for the University of Northern Iowa this fall and Cedar Falls junior Hannah Brummel, one of the top-high school divers in the state of Iowa.

"Diving is always challenging. You can always get better, and it's never boring. Never boring," Kaitie Mason said.

Cedar Falls diving coach Vic Laughlin and legendary Cedar Falls swim coach Dick Marcussen joined in the fun at The Falls Aquatic Center in Cedar Falls. Both men know what it takes to make a great diver.

"First of all, you've gotta have good support from the parents, because they help and direct the kids in the right direction. But, I think, most of all, commitment, dedication by the athletes themselves," Marcussen said.

"A great diver is the ability to refuse to lose. They've gotta hate to lose. That's what really makes them great, besides the time they put in," Laughlin said.

In the first round of dives, Mason and Brummel score 10 each, while Ron Steele's dive receives a 3.5.

In the second round, both ladies score another 10, while Steele scores a 5.5.

At the end of the day, Mason and Brummel share the gold, while Steele fails to medal.

A special thanks to Gary Dolphin for providing a play-by-play of the day's event.
