SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Shoppers were out in mass at the stores Friday. Several were open early and brought in extra employees to accommodate the influx of customers for Iowa's tax-free weekend.
They were taking advantage of the "holiday." It's designed to help families prepare for back to school.
Shoppers can buy any clothing or footwear item under $100 and not pay sales tax on it.
"Talking about getting school clothes with my mom and she's like, 'you should just wait until tax-free weekend, so I'm like, 'okay' and took the day off and went shopping," said Tabitha Welty of Sioux City.
"We've gone to Kohl's, we've gone to Gap, we've gone to Justice, a lot of different places," said Samantha Winn of Orange City, Iowa.
"Finally, I get to go shopping for school clothes because we haven't done that for a while and we don't have to pay as much as we usually do because it's tax-free," said Julianna Hurlburt of Sioux City.
Most stores say they expect to have a steady flow of customers until right before closing time. Tax-free weekend runs through midnight Saturday.
