SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Sioux City welcomed a group of guests from the other side of the globe.
A dozen middle school students are visiting from Sioux City's sister city, Yamanashi City, Japan.
The children gave a presentation about their town at City Hall Friday. They said their name, age, and what they wanted to do while in Sioux City.
During their visit the students plan to visit many local attractions, including a Sioux City Explorers game. Many said they wanted to work on their English and go shopping.
The relationship began in 1959, when Iowa airlifted hogs to the Yamanashi Prefecture after a typhoon.
Their government returned the favor by sending funds after the Iowa floods of 1993.
The friendship was formalized in 2003, when Sioux City and Yamanashi City officially became sister cities.
"I hope the citizens of Sioux City, including its mayor and students will visit our city next year," said Yamanashi School Superintendent Maruyama Morihito.
They head for New York City on Monday.
