MOVILLE, Iowa (KTIV) -
Trissa Bates is enjoying her first sand volleyball tournament at the Woodbury County Fair.
"We just decided that last, spur of the moment, go have fun," said Bates.
She's in a round robin competition, battling other fair-goers, but not the elements, for the chance to be a champion for a day.
"It's just nice being cool. You don't have to worry about the heat, about passing out or anything like that, so it makes it a lot easier to play," said Brad Schultzen, the volleyball tournament organizer.
"It's a lot more laid-back here because everybody's just here to have fun," said Bates. "It's just simply the fair, you know what I mean. We're all here to be together and play volleyball."
Bates says the mercury being lower makes her day a lot easier.
"It's really awesome to have a clear, blue day but it's still sunny."
Everyone from adults to the animals can appreciate a cooler day to kick back.
"It'll be a lot easier with the kids," said Scott Kmiecik of Kansas City, Kan. "And the freshly squeezed lemonade's going to taste just as good if it's 85 or 105. Can't wait for that."
"Today's perfect, mid-seventies, sun shining, no clouds or anything," said Nic Scheelhaase of Moville, Iowa. "Just hitting the grand stands, not sweating, just having a good time."
And Bates is ready to kick up her game a notch to make the day an even bigger win.
"It's going to be tough, since the next couple of teams have guys that are bigger and stronger, but I think that we can pull it off," said Bates.
For one day, at least, the weather made that challenge a lot more comfortable
