Wally Backman Jr. rounds the bases following his first HR of the season.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Sioux City got two-run home runs from Wally Backman Jr. and Kris Sanchez as the Explorers defeated Winnipeg 8-7 Sunday night at Lewis & Clark Park.
The victory marks the X's second series win. They've won four of their last six games.
Backman Jr. slugged his first home run of the season in the bottom of the first inning to give Sioux City a 2-0 lead. He finished the game 2-for-4, with three runs scored and two RBI.
The Goldeyes scored a run in the third to close to within 2-1, but a four run outburst in the fifth, highlighted by Luis Allen's two-run double put Winnipeg out front 5-2.
They would take a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the sixth, but with one on and one out, Sanchez clubbed his team best 14th home run of the season. The home run capped off a 3-for-4 day at the plate.
Ryan Priddy added an RBI single to pull the X's to within 6-5.
Still 6-5 in the seventh, Sioux City plated three more to open up an 8-6 lead.
The next half inning Winnipeg made it a one run game with an RBI single for Jon Weber.
In the top of the ninth, with the tying run on second, closer Chris Bodishbaugh closed things out to preserve the win.
"Well, you know after a couple of good series like this you know, we need to keep it going throughout the year," Backman Jr. said following the win. "We're a few games under .500 and hopefully this road trip we can do the same thing just like we did at home. Go there, win the series. Maybe two out of three. Maybe sweep somebody. Come back home and finish out the season strong.
Sioux City has an off day Monday and begins a three game series against Grand Prairie on Tuesday.
