HOLSTEIN, IOWA (KTIV) -
Congressional candidate Christie Vilsack says the solution to economic recovery is in rural America.
Vilsack outlined her plan for rural economic development in Holstein, Iowa Tuesday.
She said helping small towns thrive is not dependent on new programs, but about creating opportunities.
Vilsack touted bio-based companies as a way to end our dependence on foreign oil.
She said those jobs will never move away because crops are their main resource.
"What I think is to take the corns and beans that I can see right here, and we create small businesses that depend on the raw materials here, and those small businesses will be making bio-based products," said Vilsack a Democrat who is trying to unseat Western Iowa Congressman Steve King in the 4th District.
Vilsack believes renewable resources could replace the petroleum in everything from pop bottles to lipstick.
