City leaders asking residents to scoop the poop in eastern Iowa

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) -

Cedar Rapids wants its residents to scoop up their dogs' poop before it can contaminate urban creeks.
The city says the nearly 2 tons of excrement is produced by dogs each day in the eastern Iowa city. When it rains, much of the waste is washed into the stormwater system and urban creeks. The city says some sites in Linn County had E. coli levels 15 times higher than the safe level recommended by Iowa Department of Natural Resources for children playing in creeks.
The city and the Iowa Stormwater Education Program conducted a drive to persuade residents to pick up their dogs' waste. In return for their poop scoop pledges, the residents won chances for a prize drawing. The winner got a $50 gift certificate to a pet store.
