A federal bankruptcy judge is ruling against American Airlines, the lone carrier at Sioux Gateway Airport. The judge is blocking the airline from temporarily setting pay and contract rules for its pilots. The ruling says American cannot reject a contract it negotiated in 2003 and impose its own terms on pilots. American wanted to cancel the contract to cut costs as it rebuilds in bankruptcy protection.
The company that owns Sioux City's Argosy Casino is again asking a court to throw out a decision by the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission that opens the door for a possible new casino operator and license holder. Penn National contends the move by the IRGC is unconstitutional and irrational. The company wants the commission to honor a two-year extension with Missouri River Historical Development that it signed in June.
A Sioux City teen is proving that a little spare change can go a long way. Taylor Pluim and his mother started a project called "Siouxland Change for Children." They collected more than $700 in change and bought 43 boxes of clothes for needy children. The clothes will be given out to area elementary school students. Donations are still being accepted.
School starts Thursday in Sioux City and the teachers are ready. The troops were rallied at a kickoff event Wednesday that celebrated achievements from last year and provided motivation for the year ahead. Sioux City Schools Superintendent Dr. Paul Gausman led the rally. He says it helps teachers frame their vision for the year ahead.
