Parents walk their kids to class on first day at new Spaulding School.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
Thursday was the first day of school for some Siouxland students. It's also the first day of school for Spaulding Elementary, Sioux City's newest school.
Classes began at 8:40, and many parents walked their children right up to the building. Buses delivered dozens of others.
Spaulding Elementary combines the classes from Joy and Longfellow, as well as some students from Whittier.
The new school will have more than 600 students in its Kindergarten through 5th grade program this fall.
"It's exciting that it's a new school, but (he's) also nervous because it's so much bigger," said Trisha Williams, a parent. "So, it's kind of like, 'how's that going to work'?"
"It's really busy," said Allison Dubord. "I was surprised at how busy it is, but it's nice to finally have a communal place to bring everybody."
Several parents said it's nice to see the new building become reality, after construction began in the fall of 2009.
One thing they all seemed happy about the school's layout, which could make the students' lives a lot easier.
