LINCOLN, Neb. (KTIV) -
Not on his watch and not unless it's required by Nebraska law. Governor Dave Heineman responded to the Obama administration's new policy on illegal immigration Friday.
This is what it looked like earlier this week when thousands of young illegal immigrants lined up across the country to fill out paperwork, hoping for the right to work legally in the U.S. without being deported.
The immigration policy change that took effect Wednesday could expand the rights of more than one million young illegal immigrants by giving them work permits, and even a driver's license, though they would not obtain legal residency or a path to citizenship. It's for those brought to this country when they were young and have don't have a criminal past.
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman issued a statement saying, "President Obama's deferred action program to issue employment authorization documents to illegal immigrants does not make them legal citizens."
"The State of Nebraska will continue its practice of not issuing driver's licenses, welfare benefits or other public benefits to illegal immigrants unless specifically authorized by Nebraska statute."
