The Wayne State football team is not being shown a lot of love in the preseason polls.
The Wildcats were selected to finish seventh overall in the NSIC and fourth in the South Division.
Despite 13 season ending injuries, Wayne State finished the 2011 campaign with a 7-4 record, giving the Cats their fifth straight winning season.
It's an accomplishment that's never been achieved in the program's 96-year history.
Under Head Coach Dan McLaughlin, Wayne State also cracked the Top 25, ranking 24th in the nation after jumping out to a 5-1 start.
Heading into this year, the team is more than happy to fly under the radar.
"We're ok with that. We'll just be the underdogs and come out and show we can play good football," senior Kevin Paulsen said. "I'm not disappointed. It's only a number. We're ready to get going in this conference and be that very respected team. We want to get in the playoffs and win some games."
"It doesn't matter. They could have us at 22. It doesn't matter as long as you go out and win games," senior Richard Daniel added. "They could put us first or last, we're just going to come out and try our hardest."
The Cats return seven starters on offense including running back Nick Pulscher and wide receiver Kevin Paulsen. On defense, eight are back, including standout Richard Daniel, who tied for first in the NSIC with eight sacks and forced fumbles and Jared Curry, who ranked fourth on the team in tackles.
"There's a lot of speed, a lot of talent on our defensive side. I'm ecstatic," Jared Curry said. "I'm ready for this season to start right now. I'm just ready to go because I know we can be good."
"We have higher goals this year," Nick Pulscher said. "Camps been real well. We're playing up to our potential so far. Hopefully we can keep up with it. Take it one week at a time and start off on the right foot."
The Wildcats begin the season on the road with a trip to MSU Moorhead on Sept., 1.
