SOUTH SIOUX CITY, Neb. (KTIV) -
The military is near and dear to U.S. Senate candidate Bob Kerrey. The Nebraska Democrat is a highly decorated former Navy Seal. He received the Medal of Honor and the Bronze Star for his actions in Vietnam.
Today, he says works closely with returning soldiers in a PTSD program in Omaha.
During a campaign stop in South Sioux City Saturday, he said more should be done to help those returning from duty overseas.
He questioned our participation in recent wars, saying Congress should, "put their money where their mouth is," and "shouldn't go to war again unless they're willing to pay for it."
He admitted it may be hard for those in command of this country to understand the significance of that decision because many have never served.
"This is the first time in the history of our country where neither the presidential candidates or the vice-presidential candidates have ever served in the military. There are 20% of members of Congress who have served. That means 80% haven't. It matters when you're voting on whether or not to send somebody else's son or daughter to war," Kerrey pointed out.
Kerry also said the non-for-profit world should be encouraged to step in and help where Congress can't.
Kerrey faces Republican Deb Fischer in November.
