SIOUX CENTER, Iowa (KTIV) -
The subject of rape, and abortion rights for rape victims, probably wasn't going to come up in many congressional campaigns between now, and November.
That was before Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin questioned whether all rapes are legitimate during a live television interview in St. Louis on Sunday.
He was arguing against abortion rights for sexual assault victims when he said, "It seems to me, first of all, from what I understand from doctors that's really rare. If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."
During a question and answer session, in Le Mars, Iowa, today, Republican congressman Steve King, who recently endorsed Akin, was asked about Akin's comments.
King says he hasn't had time to research what Akin claimed about rape cases, but added that this should not be the deciding factor before voting.
King says Akin's congressional history is much more telling.
"I think this election should be about how did Todd Akin vote and what did he vote for, what did he stand for," said King.
