It was a close call, but no one was hurt when a train clipped a semi in Le Mars, Iowa. It happened before 2:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, near the intersection of 18th Street Southwest and Hawkeye Avenue Southwest.
The driver of this West Side Transport truck was waiting to turn off 18th and on to Hawkeye. His trailer was resting on the train tracks behind him.
The driver claims, when the Union Pacific engine approached, and the train warnings sounded, dense traffic on Hawkeye kept him from moving. The train hit the trailer, ripping it open, and tossing its cardboard contents into a nearby ditch.
Le Mars Police Department calls the collision a lucky outcome.
"If you have to have an accident with a train, this is about as good as it gets. Nobody got hurt. Trains always win," said Le Mars Police Chief Stu Dekkenga.
Police say they'll know if any citations will be issued after their investigation.
