SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KTIV) -
As Hurricane Isaac gets bigger, more resources are needed along the Golf Coast. And, The Siouxland Chapter of the America Red Cross has answered the call. Its deployed four volunteers to the storm zone so far.
One of those volunteers is Maurice Evans of Sioux City. He has been volunteering with the Red Cross since 2007.
"I've had family members that have been in disaster areas, and the Red Cross has helped them, and I think it's my turn to the do the helping myself." Maurice Evans, a Red Cross Volunteer said.
He's been involved with disaster relief for Hurricanes Irene and Ike, and with the flooding in Sioux City last year. Over the years, he's become certified to drive an Emergency Response Vehicles, as well as setting-up shelters which are important to disaster relief efforts.
"We do extensive training; before I can drive that ERV I have to have training," Evans said.
Evans' will meet other volunteers and will likely assist with feeding the displaced and distributing supplies.
"Overall they will join 1,500 volunteers that are already on the ground in preparation for what may occur," Bob Bartling, the Regional Response Director of the Siouxland American Red Cross said.
Despite being fairly active within the last several years with large scale relief efforts, Evans' focus remains the same.
"I just hope to help whoever I can whenever I can," Evans said.
Maurice and another volunteer from the Red Cross chapter in Sioux Falls, South Dakota left Tuesday morning.
The two will take turns driving an Emergency Response Vehicle all the way down to Louisiana. They expect to arrive on Wednesday.
